At Sun Life, Client data has been a top priority for over 150 years. We have a proud history of building long lasting relationships with our Clients as a trusted and responsible business. Our Client Data Privacy Principles support this by serving as internal guardrails for how we use and manage Client data.

  • Principle 1: We use Client Data to deliver on our Purpose
  • Principle 2: We do not sell Client data
  • Principle 3: We inform Clients about why we collect and use their data

Principle 1: We use Client data to deliver on our Purpose

We make data driven decisions to develop tools and technologies to help our Clients achieve lifetime financial security and live healthier lives.

Here’s an example of Principle 1 in action: Ella, our Sun Life Canada digital coach.

Ella uses Client data to bring personalized ideas, tips and actions to Clients that are timely and relevant. When life changes, Ella keeps our Clients on track with helpful reminders and actions.

“Hi, it’s Ella. Get free money for your child’s post-secondary education. Take advantage of government grants with a RESP.”

Ella helps our Clients make the most out of their coverage and plans to meet their health, wealth and protection needs.

“Ella here. Do you know you can use the my Sun Life mobile app to find the right health-care provider for you?”

Ella is there to help our Clients plan ahead for life’s key moments.

“Hi, it’s Ella. Let’s make sure your retirement income plan is still meeting your needs.”

We know it’s a privilege to have Client data, and we have a big responsibility when we use it to deliver on our Purpose.

Here’s an example of Principle 2 in action:

Sun Life U.S. Stop-Loss Benchmark Tool: An example of how we drive growth by sharing aggregate data with employer Clients at no cost.

We collect millions of unique data points to create a comprehensive and customized benchmarking tool.

We provide employers with relevant data to help them make the right decisions for their employees and stay competitive in the industry. The Benchmark Report provides insights & analysis such as:

  • Analysis into the Client’s demographics
  • Client’s overall risk profile compared to their peers’
  • Insight into the projected number of stop-loss claims and top claim conditions in their peer group.

We know it’s a privilege to have Client data, and we have a big responsibility when we use it to deliver on our Purpose.

Principle 3: We inform Clients about why we collect and use their data

We are transparent with our Clients about why we collect and use their data. We continue to simplify language we use in our communications and processes to help Clients understand their data privacy rights and options.

Here’s an example of Principle 3 in action:

Sun Life Philippines, ROME: A Remote Online Medical Examination facility for Clients, Advisors, Medical Examiners, Medical Analysts.

With ROME, Sun Life’s accredited medical examiners perform medical examinations through an online video conferencing tool.

How does ROME help inform Clients and protect their data privacy?

  • Advisors connect with Clients to discuss how their data will be collected in the Full Medical Examination form (FME).
  • Client consent to obtain information is required.
  • Record deletion is enforced to protect Client data.

FME Form (Full Medical Examination Form): Advisors review the FME form with the Client to discuss what data will be obtained by Sun Life. The Client reviews the data privacy clause before signing the form. The clause also applies to the Medical Examiner who conducts the examination.

Consent to Obtain Information: Before undergoing ROME, a signed consent is required to obtain information from the Client.

Client privacy is ensured through record deletion. Advisors and medical examiners are required to:

  • Delete all Client records stored in their personal devices within 24 hours
  • Complete an attestation clause to confirm the deletion of data

We know it’s a privilege to have Client data, and we have a big responsibility when we use it to deliver on our Purpose.
