As president of Sun Life U.S., Dan Fishbein has transformed the company into a leader in health-related benefits and services that connect to the broader healthcare ecosystem to help people access the care and coverage they need. Sun Life U.S. offers group benefits and services to more than 50 million Americans through employers, partners and government programs, and serves a block of in-force individual life insurance policyholders. 

Since joining Sun Life in 2014, Dan has overseen several successful acquisitions that have grown the company and its capabilities, including DentaQuest (2022), PinnacleCare (2021), Maxwell Health (2018), and Assurant Employee Benefits (2016). Since 2014 Sun Life U.S. has grown three-fold to $8 billion in revenues.

As an insurance leader with a medical background, Dan has unique insight into the complicated U.S. healthcare landscape. He has brought Sun Life further into the health space with services like care navigation, digital health programs, and clinical interventions that complement core health coverage.. Dan is committed to helping improve health outcomes and close coverage gaps through Sun Life’s expansion of health-related services and benefits for U.S. workers and people in underserved communities. He is a passionate advocate for paid family and medical leave and a champion of Sun Life’s Work is Healthy (WisH) approach to disability recovery and return-to-work services. 

After completing his medical degree Dan decided to pursue a career in health-related business. In his first role with MassMutual, he helped establish one of the first insurer physician and hospital networks. With New York Life, Dan led the company’s healthcare product development efforts, and then NYLCare Health Plan of Maine, broadening healthcare options for Maine and New England. He spent 16 years at Aetna, leading health plans, product development and most recently, the specialty businesses. 

Dan is an avid meteorology enthusiast and sports fan. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Boston University, and Doctor of Medicine from BU’s School of Medicine (BUSM). He serves on the Dean’s advisory board at BUSM and is a member of the Massachusetts Medical Society and Maine Medical Association. Dan is also a past chair and active board member of Spurwink Services in Portland, Maine, and serves as a board advisor for Collective Health, an insurtech start-up based in San Francisco.
