As head of government relations, Elizabeth Outten oversees Sun Life’s U.S. approach to public policy and government affairs strategies with legislative officials and regulatory bodies. She leads political matters at both the state and federal levels and, along with her team, works to build and maintain relationships with key policymakers.
For more than 20 years, Elizabeth has provided political and policy expertise in the non-profit, trade association, and campaign arenas. Before coming to Sun Life, Elizabeth was vice president, Public Affairs and Government Relations at Novant Health, where her teams led government relations, public affairs, advocacy and lobbying strategies on behalf of the health system. She also developed the Center for Public Policy Solutions, a first-of-its-kind health system think tank designed to boost patient-focused policies. Elizabeth has also served in public affairs positions with Presidential and other campaigns, the U.S. Senate, the North Carolina Bar Association and the Alaska State legislature.
Elizabeth holds a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. She is a member of the North Carolina Council for Women and a commissioner on the North Carolina Domestic Violence Commission.
