Finding Pride in Being Yourself
For Josh C., a Senior Social Media Consultant based in the U.S., Pride Month is a chance to reflect on the journey to belonging and the power of being seen for who you are.

“It was the first time I understood what it meant to live without being guarded, to show up fully as myself. That feeling has stayed with me.”
At Sun Life, stories like Josh’s reflect our commitment to building a culture where people feel safe, valued and supported to be themselves. This Pride Month, Proud to Belong highlights how we continue to create that sense of belonging—every day, for everyone. When people truly feel they belong, they can show up as themselves, share their perspectives and make a meaningful impact for our Clients, our communities and each other.
We spoke with Josh about what Pride means to him, and what it’s like to feel proud to belong at work.
Q&A with Josh
Pride Month is deeply personal for me. I moved to the Boston area in 2012, and I didn’t even know Pride Month existed. By chance, I arrived during Boston Pride and experienced a sense of welcome and celebration I had never felt before.
It was the first time I understood what it meant to live without being guarded—to show up fully as myself without filtering or hiding parts of who I am. That feeling has stayed with me.
Today, Pride is both a reminder and a grounding. It reminds me that I don’t need permission to exist openly as my full self, and that this freedom is the result of generations of courage and activism. It also feels like finding family while finding myself—a space where belonging isn’t earned, but something you can step into.
Belonging at Sun Life feels real because support shows up in meaningful, consistent ways. It’s not just something the company says—it’s something it demonstrates. From the Pride Inclusion Network to benefits that recognize chosen family, there’s a clear effort to ensure people feel seen and supported.
Representation also matters. Seeing LGBTQ+ employees and leaders visible across the organization reinforces that inclusion is not happening quietly in the background—it’s part of the culture.
Often, it’s the quieter signals that leave the biggest impression. Something like flying the Pride flag year-round may seem small, but it sends a powerful message that inclusion here is consistent, not temporary. That consistency is what makes belonging feel genuine.
To me, “Proud to Belong” means my voice is valued and my full self is recognized—not just the professional side of who I am. It also reflects being part of a community where differences are embraced and strengthen the whole.
For many people outside the LGBTQ+ community, bringing their whole self to work happens without a second thought. They talk about their families and lives openly.
For me, having that same freedom means I can show up without hesitation. I can share my life, display photos of my family, or talk about my weekend—just like anyone else—without needing to explain or justify it.
That freedom matters. It removes the pressure to filter who you are and creates space to focus on your work, relationships, and growth. It also means being in an environment where you don’t have to conform to succeed—where who you are is valued, not something to overcome.
When you don’t have to hold part of yourself back, you can bring more of your energy, creativity, and authenticity into everything you do.
Colleagues and allies at Sun Life play an active role in bringing inclusion to life. Their support goes beyond words. Whether it’s organizing Pride events, checking in, or seeking out different perspectives, they help create a more welcoming workplace.
What stands out most is their willingness to engage, even in difficult conversations. There are spaces where people can ask thoughtful, sometimes uncomfortable questions respectfully, and those moments build real understanding and trust.
That kind of partnership matters. It turns inclusion into something we build together, where allyship is active, thoughtful, and part of the culture.
Take your time and be kind to yourself. There’s no need to have everything figured out or to change who you are all at once.
Learning who you are—and where you feel most at home—is a lifelong journey, and no two paths look the same. There’s nothing wrong with being exactly where you are right now.
Belonging doesn’t happen all at once. It builds over time through small moments, honest conversations, and finding spaces where you feel safe to be yourself.
Building a culture where everyone belongs
Stories like Josh’s are happening across Sun Life every day. They remind us that belonging isn’t built in a single moment or during one month. It grows over time through everyday actions, conversations and experiences that help people feel seen, supported and included.
Proud to Belong at Sun Life is something we live each day, shaped by moments big and small that create connection and understanding. We’re committed to building a workplace where everyone can be who they are, feel supported and know they belong, not just during Pride Month, but throughout the year.
