When Marc Cacho talks about the story behind Milagros Elderly Care Home Services, he doesn't begin with a business plan.

He begins with his father.

"The story of Milagros started with my father," Marc explains. After his father's passing in November 2020, Marc made a decision: he would continue his father's legacy by creating a place where older adults could receive the care, dignity and respect they deserve.

The result was Milagros, an elderly care home in the Philippines that provides support for older members of the community while fostering a sense of belonging and family. At its core is a simple philosophy: love is meant to be passed on.

Building a home with purpose

Creating Milagros was never something Marc expected to do alone.

He credits family, friends and his partner, Laurence, for helping bring the vision to life. Together, they shared a commitment to supporting older adults and creating a home where residents could feel cared for and valued.

Along the way, community support played an important role. Donations from organizations and individuals helped ease some of the costs associated with caring for residents and allowed the team to continue focusing on what matters most—the people they serve.

But as Milagros grew, Marc began thinking about another group of people who were essential to its success.

The caregivers.

Caring for the caregivers

Every day, caregivers at Milagros help residents with medical needs, daily activities and companionship. They are often the first to notice when someone needs support and the people residents rely on most.

For Marc, their contributions are impossible to overlook.

"The heart of Milagros lives in its caregivers," he says. Even as founder, he believes it's just as important to care for the people who keep the home running as it is to care for the residents themselves.

That belief became deeply personal when one member of his team experienced a stroke.

A turning point

When the caregiver suffered a stroke, the impact extended beyond the workplace.

Fortunately, financial support was available through Sun Life coverage, helping provide assistance during a challenging period. For Marc, the experience reinforced an important lesson: caring for employees means helping them prepare for life's unexpected moments, too.

"It made me realize I need to take care of my people, too," Marc says.

Through conversations with Chris Callejo, his Sun Life advisor, Marc gained a broader understanding of how financial protection could support the people who make Milagros possible every day.

Financial planning is about people

For Chris, Marc's story is a reminder that financial planning isn't just about finances.

"Not all families look the same," Chris explains. "But the love and responsibility is just as real." He believes financial planning is ultimately about helping people protect what matters most—whether that's a spouse, a parent, a child, a friend or the community they serve.

That perspective resonated with Marc.

Today, everyone at Milagros—from caregivers to support staff—has insurance coverage through Sun Life. Marc wanted every member of his team to know they have access to protection and support, regardless of what the future may bring.

"I know that no matter what happens to us, we will be protected," he says.

Protection that makes care possible

For organizations like Milagros, financial security creates ripple effects.

When employees feel supported, they can focus on the people who depend on them. Families gain greater confidence in the future. Communities benefit from stronger care networks. And employers can help create a culture where people know they are valued. This perspective is reflected throughout Marc's story of caring for residents while also protecting the people who care for them.

For Marc, that's what his father's legacy has become.

What began as a promise to honour one person's life has grown into a community built on compassion, dignity and support for residents, caregivers and families alike.

And in that community, no one has to face life's challenges alone.
