Allies Acting for Change

Following the events of 2020, we wanted to take a new approach to diversity in a way we never had before. So we created Allies Acting for Change (AAC).

Following the events of 2020, we wanted to take a new approach to diversity in a way we never had before. So we created Allies Acting for Change (AAC).

The journey has begun across our entire organization and our collective dialogue has set the foundation for this important work. While we have much to do, our path forward is clear with a mix of short-term and long-term commitments. Collectively, we must stand up to meet the challenge together.

With the endorsement of our senior leadership, Allies Acting for Change is focused on these actions:

Ensuring that our employees and people leaders are equipped and supported through increased awareness and education

  • We’re hosting ongoing Stay conversations to identify career and development opportunities for all employees.
  • We’ve launched a cutting-edge diversity training to build a more inclusive culture.
  • Leadership training and support.

Building bridges across teams to increase Black/African American representation across all levels of the organization by 2025

  • Targeted mentorship programs to increase support & exposure for up and coming talent.
  • Career coaching for leaders of color to increase cross-functional collaboration.
  • Virtual coffee chats between senior leadership members and Black/African American employees to network and build relationships.
  • Increased support for Sun Life’s Inclusion Networks and their leadership.

Increased engagement and retention

  • We’re conducting regular surveys to stay connected to the employee experience and assess our progress.
  • We aim to be transparent and consistent in our reporting on diversity of our recruiting pipeline, hires, promotions, and departures.

To support these efforts, we have made improvements to our talent acquisition process to increase diverse candidate slates at all levels and are forming partnerships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and other local colleges and universities in order to reach more Black and African American candidates.

Additionally, we have developed clear performance expectations for inclusive, anti-racist behaviors for all of our people leaders and employees.
