Scams and alerts

At Sun Life, we're committed to helping our clients protect themselves from fraud and scams.

Why fraud prevention is important

Familiarizing yourself with common fraud alerts and scams is an essential step in safeguarding your personal and financial information. If you encounter any suspicious activity involving the Sun Life name, logo, or variations thereof, please contact us immediately.

Understanding fraudulent tactics

Fraudsters often employ enticing promises to obtain personal information or financial assets. It's crucial to verify that you're communicating with an authorized Sun Life representative before sharing sensitive information or transferring funds.

Sun Life thoroughly investigates all reported misuse of our brand, logo, or corporate name. When we identify a scam, we provide detailed information and preventive measures on this page to help protect individuals.

Common fraud examples

Be vigilant for malicious parties impersonating legitimate Sun Life employees and advisors. Watch for these red flags:

  • Requests for personal information from unverified contacts
  • Promises of unclaimed insurance policies or unrealistic rates of return
  • Communications from unfamiliar international phone numbers or email addresses
  • Pressure to engage in financial transactions without proper verification

Sun Life is dedicated to protecting job seekers from fraudulent employment offers. Be alert to these warning signs:

  • Poor grammar and spelling in job advertisements
  • Contact information not associated with official Sun Life domains (@sunlife.com or @slcmanagement.com)
  • Interviews conducted solely via instant messaging platform or text
  • Lack of face-to-face or video interview options
  • Requests for personal or financial information early in the application process

Remember, Sun Life never requires applicants to make advance payments for software, equipment, or any other purpose as a condition of employment.

We've observed an increase in fraudulent schemes where individuals falsely claim to represent Sun Life employees or advisors. These scams often target Canadian citizens with offers of lucrative investment opportunities or notifications of unclaimed insurance policies and payouts.

Be wary of:

  • Counterfeit websites, online forms, and email addresses designed to appear authentic
  • Claims of obstacles such as government regulations or foreign tax implications
  • A sense of urgency around receiving your application or deposit
  • Guarantees or results that seem too good to be true

Sun Life will never initiate contact to request sensitive information such as passwords, bank account details, or credit card numbers.

Be cautious of "operators" posing as Sun Life representatives. They may try to:

  • Get you to reveal personal information over the phone
  • Arrange a meeting at your home or in a public place
  • Obtain your credit card numbers, social insurance number, or Sun Life insurance policy number

Sun Life keeps your policy and personal information in strictest confidence and does not disclose this information to telemarketers.

Sun Life does not engage in or sponsor lottery or sweepstakes contests. Be cautious of:

  • Unsolicited notifications of a supposed win
  • Requests to deposit a cheque into your bank account
  • Instructions to return a portion of the funds, usually via electronic transfer or wire

We strongly advise against cashing any such cheque or contacting any phone number provided in these communications.

  • Verify credentials before engaging in financial transactions
  • Be skeptical of offers that seem too good to be true
  • Never share personal or financial information with unsolicited contacts
  • Review Sun Life's privacy commitment for more information on how we protect your data
