Sun Life is committed to protecting the privacy of all personal information or data entrusted to us ("Personal Information").

In Bermuda, we operate Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada (Bermuda Branch) and Sun Life Financial Investments (Bermuda) Ltd. (together, referred to here as “Sun Life International”).  Sun Life International uses information about you that can identify you, and we are committed to using your personal information in a lawful and fair manner, and in compliance with the Bermuda’s Personal Information Protection Act 2016 (“PIPA”). This Privacy Notice is designed to comply with our privacy notice requirements pursuant to PIPA.

We collect, use, and disclose personal information and sensitive personal information (as defined in PIPA) about you only for the purposes for which it was collected. We do not sell your personal information or use it for marketing purposes.

Depending on your products, services you use, and your interactions with us, the information we need may include:

  • Contact information such as your name, mailing address, email, phone number.
  • Demographic information such as your age, gender, date of birth, place of birth, employment details, marital status, beneficiary information, nationality as well as details related to your beneficiaries or dependents.
  • Health information such as your lifestyle information, health and smoking status, medical history, diagnosis.
  • Financial information such as contributions, investment funds and accounts, retirement goals, source of income, risk tolerance.
  • Identifiers such as bank account number and government issued IDs 
  • Supporting documents such as tax slips, bank statements, identity verification, wills, proof of relationship, death certificates, power of attorney.
  • Information about your interactions with us such as your survey responses, call centre interactions, and complaints.

We collect and use your personal information and sensitive personal information as it is essential to our ability to offer you high-quality insurance and investment products and services. Your personal information may be used by us for the following purposes:

  • To process and evaluate an application, transaction, or request related to life insurance, annuity, investment account, or other product or service we may offer (any of which referred to here for convenience as “your policy”).
  • To underwrite an application for your policy.
  • To administer claims and determine or fulfill responsibility for coverage and provision of benefits.
  • To administer coverage, benefits, and other features provided by your policy.
  • To obtain reinsurance.
  • To coordinate the provision of our products or services with our suppliers or service providers.
  • As may be required for any legal or regulatory purposes, including but not limited to those associated with our due diligence Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing, or other “Know Your Customer” requirements or governance practices.
  • For undertaking data analytics, statistical analysis or related customer relationship assessment and evaluation. 
  • For any other legally permissible purpose related to your policy.

Once we obtain personal information and sensitive personal information from you, we do not disclose it to anyone except as permitted or required by law.   

We may share your information within Sun Life International and with our affiliates to help us develop financial products and services. We also may disclose your information to third parties that help us conduct our business or perform services on our behalf.  We require these third parties to protect the privacy of our clients' information and permit them to use and disclose it only for the purpose for which it is provided. These third parties may include reinsurers, affiliates, third party service providers and agents of Sun Life International who may be engaged to assist with the administration of your policy, to carry out the above purposes, professional advisors, financial intermediaries such as brokers and banks, and otherwise as may be required or permitted by applicable law. 

There also may be times when Sun Life International is required to disclose its clients' information, such as when complying with applicable laws, when responding to a subpoena, or when complying with an inquiry by a governmental agency or regulator.

Requesting access to or limiting the use of your information

To obtain access to, or make a request for limiting the use of, correcting, blocking, erasing or destroying your personal information, please submit a written request to the Sun Life International Access Request e-mail address listed below.  This request must include sufficient information to enable us, with reasonable effort, to identify the personal information that is relevant to your request.  Your request must also include all necessary contact information for us to respond to your request and validate the identity of the requestor. 

You will be contacted promptly by the Sun Life International governance team to confirm our receipt of your request.

Sun Life International reserves the right to update this privacy notice at any time and as may be prudent or necessary to reflect changes in our privacy practices or legal requirements.

Please note the following information associated with any request we receive from you:

  • We require your accurate and complete name and contact information
  • We will promptly confirm our receipt of your enquiry or instructions
  • We will take a reasonable amount of time to process your enquiry or instructions and respond to your request, but usually no more than 45 days (depending upon the nature and complexity of your request)

The Company reserves all of its rights and protections afforded to it under PIPA.
