A serious health diagnosis is emotional and overwhelming. Imagine you or a family member are diagnosed with cancer, a heart condition, or are suffering from long-term COVID-19 complications. Receiving the diagnosis alone is emotional and overwhelming. Now you are faced with the daunting and time-consuming task of finding and accessing the right care. It can be difficult and stressful.

To help Americans navigate the health-care system, Sun Life recently launched Health Navigator powered by PinnacleCare. Personal Health Advisors give Clients one-on-one support and guidance. This concierge approach helps Clients and their family members get medical opinions, find the right specialists and treatment centers, and schedule appointments. The advisors can even track down medical records or documentation from various providers.

Health Navigator not only helps people manage their health-care journey. It gives them peace of mind and time to focus on getting better during a challenging and often scary period in their lives.

“So often, navigating the health care system feels like you’re getting forwarded across countless phone lines or meeting with tonnes of people, and it’s really neat and different to have a very personal experience.” - Micah, patient.

Amy (Patient): My name is Amy and I am 39 years old. I worked in the hedge fund services industry and I am a relationship manager.

Micah (Patient): I am the LGBT center director at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio and a member of our Athens City council.

Amy: I was diagnosed with a new mutation that increases my cancer risk.

Micah: Several months ago, I received a preliminary diagnosis of MS.

Amy: I just sent a quick submission form. "Here's what's going on". I immediately received a call back.

Tiangé (Personal Health Advisor): I was able to explain to her the services of PinnacleCare and what those next steps would be.

Amy: Tiangé came to me and said, "We can get you in and here are some doctors that you may see for your risk of ovarian cancer and your risk of breast cancer."

Micah: Everything that I ended up giving someone after finally getting transferred to the right person in records who just said, “nope, you're not in the system”. And those are the worst, most frustrating words.

Ali (Personal Health Advisor): Definitely, you know, definitely the record collection was, was difficult, but we did it. So, I just wanted to make sure that we stayed on top of it because a lot of times things like that can fall through the cracks.

Micah: Feels like you have a team constantly working to advocate for you because you are getting these periodic updates that are good news, successful appointment scheduled or records found, additional records found, the complicated imaging ones that were in a different system than the written notes. So all that sort of peace definitely made me feel like I had a strong support that was constantly working in the background throughout my experience.

Amy: And I feel like I'm in the best hands. I feel like I have a very clear plan in terms of what I need to do and just really overall, just so blessed for all of that.

Micah: So often navigating the healthcare system feels like you're getting forwarded across countless phone lines or meeting with tons of people, and it's really neat and different to have a very personal experience.
