Design methodologies

At Sun Life, we design for people. They're at the heart of everything we do. We use proven methodologies to be consistent in our approach to advocate for the human experience. Here are the design methodologies we use.

Design thinking

Design thinking is a human-centered approach to finding the right problems to solve for end users. It helps us develop solutions that create better experiences for them. Sun Life has adopted its own design thinking practice that puts our Clients' needs at the centre of what we do.

We recommend using a five-step framework:

  • Empathize
  • Define
  • Ideate
  • Pretotype
  • Validate

This helps us find innovative concepts for solving user-centered problems.

Why design thinking?

We use this approach because it's good for clients and for business. We engage with Clients early and often. This helps us find the right problems to solve for them and help meet their needs. It also helps us avoid surprises and ensure that clients are getting the solutions they expect.

Our team can deliver solutions quickly because we learn what's working and what isn't in a short timeframe. Then, we build and improve the elements as needed. We work to create a consistent experience that works well with any of our products and services. Approaching design in this way means our solutions are scalable for our business and predictable for users.

Inclusive design

We strive for inclusive and accessible designs. It's important to us to respect and tailor our journeys to suit each user's abilities and background. We keep this top of mind in everything we do.

We make sure our experiences are accessible. From each design component in our design system to every page in our Sun Life environment. We offer frequent accessibility training to our team members to stay updated with industry standards and best practices.

As a global organization, we design for diverse end users of all backgrounds. We want to deeply understand our users in their context to fulfill their needs.
