Insights into Americans’ Changing Views of Retirement

Americans aren’t just reassessing their retirement. Many are moving into Unretirement—continuing to work after being eligible for full Social Security benefits. Sun Life Financial is analyzing this trend to learn how economic, financial and societal forces are affecting working Americans. The Unretirement Index tells us why Americans are making these important financial and lifestyle decisions. Here are some highlights from our latest study:

65% Weathering the storm: The Index says 65% of all Americans will need to work at least one more year because of the economic crisis. Read more
Graph Working longer: A record 55% of Americans now plan to work past age 67, and the number who plan to work full-time at that age is also a new high. Read more
Remote Losing ground: Americans are feeling less confident about retiring, financial planning, and their overall outlook on future generations. Read more


Where Are Americans Getting Their Financial Advice?

You’d think that in today’s economy more Americans would look to the professionals, especially if they are looking at a future of Unretirement – working past the traditional retirement age because they have to or want to. But that’s not the case. Most Americans, especially those under 50, are more likely to turn to family members or friends before financial advisors when it comes to financial advice.
