Survey methodology

Timing: Survey conducted between August 14, 2009 and September 14, 2009
Survey Method: Phone interviews conducted by Interviewing Service of America using a random-digit dial (RDD) sampling method
US sample Size:

1,450 full- and part-time workers. Quotas and size: weights were applied to gather a sample which was representative of the working population between the ages of 18 and 66. The sample was also representative in terms of gender and four-region census break.

MA sample Size:

405 full- and part-time workers. Quotas and size: weights were applied to gather a sample which was representative of the working population between the ages of 18 and 66. The sample was also representative in terms of gender and four-region county break.

  • Worcester & Points West: Includes Berkshire, Franklin, Hampshire, Hampden & Worcester counties
  • Northeast: Includes Middlesex and Essex counties
  • Southeast, Cape & Islands: Includes Norfolk, Bristol, Barnstable, Plymouth, Dukes & Nantucket counties
  • Suffolk County: Includes the cities of Boston, Revere, Chelsea and Winthrop
Analysis & segmentation:

Analysis & Analysis and construction of indexes involved the application of factor analysis. Final indexes are based on summated averages across the attributes which make up an index. Age groups were divided by workers ranged from 18-29, workers in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60+ and by three ranges of total assets exclusive of personal residence:

  • less than $100K
  • $100-500K
  • greater than $500K
Margin of error: 95% confidence level, with a margin of error of 2.5% (Source: Fleishman Hillard)
