The index and sub index scores gauge the public’s outlook on key issues that impact their retirement decisions. The overall index score reflects the averages of the underlying sub indexes, and are graded on a 1-100 score.

Overall Index

Index based on summated mean scores across each index below:

Economic Sub Index

Rates items that are controlled by the economy: 

  • employment opportunities
  • housing values
  • level of taxes
  • cost of food
  • rate of inflation
  • cost of energy for the home
  • stock market returns
  • cost of gasoline

Personal Finance Sub Index

Rates items that a worker has some level of personal control over: 

  • level of personal debt
  • current annual income
  • amount of money invested (example: 401k, IRA, stocks)
  • personal income growth 
  • current rate of return on investments

Health Sub Index

Rates items that a worker has a high level of personal control over: 

  • level of happiness with life
  • level of personal health
  • diet and nutrition 
  • level of fitness

Government Benefits Sub Index

Rates items that are controlled by the government:

  • Social Security
  • Medicare from the government
  • prescription drug benefits from the government

Employee Benefits Sub Index

Rates items that are controlled by the employer: 

  • pension/defined benefit plan (not a 401k) from an employer 
  • medical benefits from an employer
