U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Recognizes Sun Life Financial as Green Power Partner
U.S. EPA Administrator Curt Spalding and MA State Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs Richard Sullivan, Jr. honor Sun Life for helping Wellesley become first town in MA, 33rd in U.S. to receive distinction
Wellesley, Mass. (Sept. 4, 2012) – The U.S. business group of Sun Life Financial Inc. (NYSE:SLF, TSX:SLF), headquartered in Wellesley, Mass., today announced it has received an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Green Power Partner award for its role in helping the town of Wellesley, Mass. increase its use of renewable energy . Wellesley is the first community in Massachusetts and only the 33rd in the United States to receive this distinction.
EPA Administrator Curt Spalding presented the award to Sun Life Senior Facilities Manager Tom Haven at a special ceremony held at Wellesley Town Hall today. Massachusetts State Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs Richard Sullivan, Jr. and Wellesley town officials and Municipal Light representatives were on hand to celebrate the partnership awards, which were also presented to Babson College, Mass Bay Community College and Wellesley College.
“We’re honored to stand alongside these prestigious organizations and be recognized for our collective efforts to help Wellesley achieve a sustainable future,” said David J. Healy, Senior Vice President of Sun Life’s Service Center. “The Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power award is a testament to Sun Life’s commitment to making life brighter and cleaner for the communities where we work and live.”
Sun Life achieved this distinction for its participation in the Town-appointed Sustainable Energy Committee’s POWER TO CHOOSE campaign, which encourages rate payers to voluntarily pay a premium to purchase all or part of their electricity through Wellesley Renewable Energy, power produced by the Spruce Mountain wind farm in Maine.
Green Power Communities are defined by the EPA as municipalities in which the local government, businesses and residents collectively buy renewable energy in amounts that meet or exceed EPA's Green Power Community purchase requirements; these requirements are based on the percentage of renewable energy used within the community’s boundaries and vary, depending on the community’s baseload electricity use. Once designated a Green Power Community, partners initiate broad-based educational campaigns – with technical and outreach assistance from the EPA – that encourage more local businesses and residents to buy renewable energy.
Sun Life is a leader in corporate philanthropy and committed to the communities in which it does business. The company’s signature national philanthropic initiative, the Sun Life Rising Star Awards, provides college scholarships and grants to under-served youth and youth-oriented nonprofits in Boston and other cities across the country. Sun Life also supports local charities including the Jimmy Fund and Home for Little Wanderers and serves as host for Wellesley’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Breakfast.
