Sun Life Financial Delivers Identity Theft Protection with Travel Assistance for Existing Group Life Customers

Three million employees with group life coverage who work at more than 22,000 employers across the U.S. now have Identify Theft Protection  

Wellesley Hills, MA (September 30, 2010) – Sun Life Financial Inc. (NYSE: SLF, TSX: SLF)  today announced it has enhanced its Emergency Travel Assistance service for Group Basic Life customers with an Identity Theft Protection service. Both services are now standard benefits for eligible Group Basic Life customers who purchased their policy before April 1, 2010.

“With Identity Theft Protection, we give employees a powerful ally on their side to fight these crimes,” continued Shunney.

The two services – Emergency Travel Assistance and Identity Theft Protection – are provided by Assist America®, the nation’s largest provider of global emergency services through group benefits plans. Highlights of the services include:

  • SecurAssist Identity Protection® gives 24/7 access to anti-fraud experts, who are available to guide employees through the resolution process and help remove the damage done by identity thieves. Employees are assigned a dedicated caseworker who helps them for the duration of the recovery process. Caseworkers can help notify credit bureaus and file paperwork to correct credit reports, cancel stolen credit cards and reissue new cards, and notify police, financial institutions, and government agencies.

    Assist America can also help prevent fraud before it happens, through its 24/7 surveillance service that monitors underground chat rooms where thieves sell and trade stolen personal information. Employee can be notified if their credit cards are at risk of being misused.
     
  • Emergency Travel Assistance protects employees and their families with access to a 24/7 operations center if they have a medical, dental, or personal emergency while they are more than 100 miles from home. They will be connected to English-speaking medical providers, emergency medical evacuation services, legal and translation services, lost prescription assistance, hospital admission guarantee, and more.

This enhancement is part of a larger program to provide industry-leading employee services to Group Life customers. Earlier this year, Sun Life introduced a program that enables new customers to choose the services that matter most to their employees. Employer groups of 10 or more with employer-paid coverage purchased on or after April 1, 2010, can choose the package they want — either Emergency Travel Assistance with Identity Theft Protection, or Claimant Support Services with Online Will Preparation. Today’s enhancement for Sun Life’s existing customers that purchased coverage prior to April brings them in line with what new customers are receiving.
