Accident insurance can help minimize the financial impact if you, your spouse,1 or your child experiences an accident.
How does it work?
If you experience a covered accident, you will receive a cash benefit according to a benefits schedule. You may use this money however you wish—to pay for prescriptions or other out-of-pocket expenses, like crutches, that may not be covered by health insurance. The cost of the insurance is determined by the benefit amounts available with your plan, and the amount you receive depends on your injury.
Accident insurance pays cash benefits for injuries, such as fractures and dislocations, and it also pays benefits for the care of those injuries, such as benefits for ambulance rides, emergency room visits, and outpatient office visits. It also pays accidental death and dismemberment benefits for a loss due to a covered accidental injury or death.

Optional Accident Disability benefit
In addition to the support that accident insurance gives you, you may also have the opportunity to protect your finances further by choosing the Accident Disability benefit. If the injuries that result from a covered accident prevent you from working and your claim is approved, Sun Life will pay you a fixed amount of money on a weekly basis to help you stay on track with everyday expenses while you recuperate.
This weekly stream of income would be on top of the Accident insurance benefit. And, this Accident Disability benefit is not reduced by any other source of income you might have. The number of weeks for which you could receive benefits will depend on the plan or plans offered by your employer.

Your plan may come with:
|Emergency Travel Assistance||A service that provides assistance to you anywhere in the world in the event of a medical, dental, or legal emergency. If you or a family member are traveling 100 or more miles from home and an emergency occurs, you can connect anytime to Assist America’s staff of medically trained, multilingual professionals. With Emergency Travel Assistance, you also have access to services such as pre-qualified English-speaking medical professionals—including doctors, hospital staff, and pharmacists—as well as emergency medical evacuations and legal and interpreter services.|
|Identity Theft Protection||A service that helps prevent identity theft from occurring and restores your personal financial records if it does. The program provides 24-hour surveillance for up to 10 credit or debit cards, as well as telephonic support and guidance by anti-fraud experts. Through web-based monitoring, the Identity Theft Protection program provides prompt notification of a compromise of personal information, and will also assign an expert case worker to help notify credit bureaus and file paperwork to correct your credit reports.|

Accident Insurance is a limited benefit policy. It provides accident coverage only and does not provide basic hospital, basic medical, or major medical insurance. This coverage does not constitute comprehensive health insurance (often referred to as “major medical coverage”) and does not satisfy the requirement for Minimum Essential Coverage under the Affordable Care Act. Failing to maintain Minimum Essential Coverage may result in a tax penalty.
The certificate and its riders have exclusions and limitations that may affect any benefits payable. Benefits payable are subject to all terms and conditions of the certificate. The policy, certificate, and any rider, if applicable, may not be available in all states.
For New York consumers: The expected benefit ratio for this policy is 65%. This ratio is the portion of future premiums which the Company expects to return as benefits, when averaged over all people with the policy.
