Retro Disability Benefits

SLPC 25188 11/15 (exp. 11/17)

Retro Disability Benefits – an innovative product that gives financial help to employees who suffer a serious disability.

How does it work?

Typical LTD plans have an Elimination Period during which LTD benefits are not paid. Seriously disabled employees who were continuously hospitalized for 14 days or more at the onset of the disability and who have completed the Elimination Period and have been approved for LTD benefits, are eligible for a Retro Disability Benefit – a retroactive, lump-sum payment equivalent to a benefit paid for the duration of the Elimination Period.

The claimant receives the benefit as a lump sum payment and monthly LTD benefits begin. The Retro Disability Benefit is not offset for earnings, sick pay, or other insurance benefits.

Retro in action: a claim example

Ann is injured in a car accident on January 1, and she's in the hospital for three weeks. She gets 60% of her salary through short-term disability benefits for the first 90 days of her total disability, until April 1. On April 1, she's still deemed Totally Disabled. The 90-day Elimination Period for her LTD benefits is over, her LTD benefits kick in, and she starts receiving 60% of her salary through LTD benefits.

With Retro Disability Benefits, Sun Life would send Ann an extra check soon after April 1 for an amount equal to 90 days worth of LTD benefits. If Ann's salary was $40,000, this check could be as much as $6,000 ($40,000/12 months x 60% benefit x 3 month Elimination Period).
