We encourage our employees to contribute to making our local surrounding communities healthier. We offer our employees multiple volunteer events and programs throughout the year. By supporting the health of our local communities, we are supporting the health of our culture and business in many ways.
Community Care Day
Every year, our employees get actively involved in our local communities through our company-sponsored day of volunteerism, Community Care Day. Together, employees work to maintain and improve facilities of local nonprofit organizations and local farms so they can better serve people in need.
Community Care Day has been well supported by employees wanting to make a difference, with approximately 100 employees volunteering each year.
Read to a Child
Sun Life employees participate as volunteer mentors for Read to a Child’s lunchtime reading program. This innovative literacy and mentoring organization helps increase children’s prospects for success in school and in life. With the help of volunteer mentors, we can help make a difference for children who otherwise may fall behind their peers in reading or who are not being read to while at home on a regular basis.
Children’s Center for Visually Impaired Trolley Run
Each year, local Kansas City employees have participated in the annual Children’s Center for Visually Impaired (CCVI) Trolley Run. This event benefits CCVI, which is a premiere school for children with visual impairment. Connected to our business and at the hearts of many employees, this is a well-attended event in the heart of Kansas City. This race is now known as a Kansas City tradition and is one of the largest timed four mile road races in the United States.
Hospital Hill Run
As one of the premier running events in Kansas City, the annual Hospital Hill Run hosts thousands of runners on three courses; a half marathon, a 10k, and a 5k. This event is unique in that it does not benefit just one organization, but instead allows multiple charities the opportunity to use the race as their own fundraiser.
Through Junior Achievement USA, Sun Life employees in our Windsor, CT, office go back to school to become teachers for a day at a local elementary school. The Junior Achievement program provides volunteers with grade-appropriate educational materials and curriculum that they can use in the classroom for the entire school day. This exciting program gives employees the ability to directly convey to local youth the importance of staying in school and building the necessary skills they need to work toward a financially sound and successful future.
Our Corporate Social Responsibility team in Waterford, Ireland fundraises throughout the year for local charities and groups, which are nominated by employees. Most recently, employees nominated Pieta House--a nonprofit organization that provides specialized treatment programs for people who have suicidal thoughts and who engage in self-harming. Our Waterford office has supported Pieta House since 2013, through volunteer programs and fundraising efforts. Pieta House has also trained Sun Life employees as community volunteers, to help identify the signs and symptoms of suicidal behavior and to put those in need of help in touch with Pieta House.
