TORONTO (February 22, 2008) – Sun Life Financial and its China joint venture Sun Life Everbright announced they will make a donation of more than $100,000 to support relief efforts in the wake of China’s severe weather disaster. Snow storms and frigid weather have paralyzed the country since early January, a situation which was exacerbated by the significant amount of travel associated with the Lunar New Year holiday which began on February 7. The donation will be made through the Bureau of Civil Affairs in Tianjin, China.
Sun Life Everbright’s employees in China also donated $8,750 to the cause, which was matched by Sun Life Financial, providing an additional $17,500 to the relief effort. Representatives from Sun Life Financial and Sun Life Everbright will present the donation to government representatives from the municipality of Tianjin on Friday. Officials from the government of Tianjin noted that this donation is the largest they’ve received so far for the relief effort.
The donation will be used to aid families of workers killed during the snow storms and to support recovery of damaged primary schools in the six provinces hit hardest by the storms. In addition to the financial donation, Sun Life Everbright is providing a dedicated 24-hour hotline for customers requiring claims and emergency assistance.

"These recent severe snowstorms have had an enormous impact on the lives of Chinese people in affected areas and Sun Life, along with our employees, wanted do our part to support the relief effort."
