We believe that giving back to communities around the world is an important part of being a good corporate citizen. In 2012, we donated more than $1.9 million to programs supporting social services. Here are some of the organizations we have recently supported:
Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada
The organization’s Get BUSY program helps tackle the growing problem of inactivity and obesity by getting children and youth involved in new activities and educating them on the importance of making healthy lifestyle choices. Teens are provided with training to deliver the program to children ages 8-12, which involves a wide variety of physical activities, information on making healthy food choices, food preparation and health promotion. As a result of Sun Life Financial’s donation, 10 locations across the country will receive funding in order to implement this program in their area, benefitting up to 1,000 youth.
Marshall McLuhan Prize, Philippines
Since 2007, Sun Life has sponsored the Marshall McLuhan Prize for investigative journalism excellence in the Philippines.
The award was created by the Centre for Media Freedom and Responsibility, a non-profit foundation in Manila, and the Embassy of Canada in Manila as a way to encourage democracy through investigative journalism.
Sun Life Financial is a leader in supporting United Way/Centraide and we are proud of our employees and advisors who make a difference in our communities by supporting this organization. Our goal is to raise $1 million through employee/advisor contributions and Sun Life Financial’s matching gift program in support of United Way/Centraide across Canada. Sun Life Financial has received the "Thanks a Million" award, the United Way’s highest honour, for 10 consecutive years.
Community Care Day, United States
Every year, Sun Life holds a "Community Care Day," for employees to come together to help their local communities. Sun Life volunteers joined members of Boston Cares (a non-profit community support organization) at Boston Harbor, tackling chores at The Long Island Shelter and Serving Ourselves Farm. Volunteers also helped at Camp Harbor View, an organization partnered with the Boy & Girls Clubs of Boston.
In their own words
“Canadian Blood Services attributes our success to the ongoing generosity of our valuable corporate partners. Sun Life's financial gift to our ‘Campaign For All Canadians’ is vital as we continue to build our national public cord blood bank.”
