We believe that giving back to communities around the world is an important part of being a good corporate citizen. Here are some of the organizations we have recently supported:
Marshall McLuhan Prize
Since 2007, Sun Life has sponsored the Marshall McLuhan Prize for investigative journalism excellence in the Philippines.
The award was created by the Centre for Media Freedom and Responsibility, a non-profit foundation in Manila, and the Embassy of Canada in Manila as a way to encourage democracy through investigative journalism.
As a major supporter of United Way across Canada, Sun Life encourages employees and advisors to organize local campaigns in their communities. In 2013, employees and advisors raised $977,914 in support of United Way agencies and charitable organizations across Canada. In addition, Sun Life matched these donations with an additional $590,954, for a total combined donation of $1,568,868.
In 2014, we will receive a "Thanks a Million" award for the 11th consecutive year recognizing our efforts in generating more than $1 million in donations. Our donations help support United Way’s network of agencies across the country and other charitable organizations.
Brighter World Campaign
In the Philippines, Sun Life Financial Philippines Foundation Inc. created the Brighter World Campaign, as a way to strengthen national donations with a focus around education, health and well-being and social improvements.
Brighter Life Community Programmme
In the U.K., The Brighter Life Community Programmme funds charity and community groups across Hampshire and Gloucestershire, focusing on health, education and arts and cultural projects. In 2013, approximately $122,000 was donated to over 40 organizations in the area, funding various initiatives such as dental healthcare and healthy eating projects, art and dance workshops and providing specialized mobility equipment.
Community Care Day
Every year in the U.S., Sun Life holds a "Community Care Day," for employees to come together to help their local communities. In 2013 Sun Life volunteers joined members of Boston Cares (a non-profit community support organization) at Victory Programs’ ReVision Family Home and Urban Farm in the Boston neighborhood of Dorchester. The ReVision house is a shelter for homeless, expectant mothers and their families, and is directly connected to the ReVision Urban Farm, which provides hands-on nutritional services to those staying in the shelter.
In their own words
"As a National Sponsor of the TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes, Sun Life Financial is helping JDRF to raise funds to push vital type 1 diabetes (T1D) research forward, moving us closer to turning type 1 into type none."
